Things to see & do in Brunei

Follow the links below or scroll further down the page for details on some of the many interesting tourist attractions in Brunei:

Proboscis Monkey

The Proboscis monkey is a primate found only in Borneo and Sumatra. It has a huge pendulous nose, a characteristic pot belly and makes strange honking sounds, making it one of the most peculiar and unique animals in the world. Seeing the proboscis monkey will be a highlight on your Brunei holiday. There are an abundance of them among the mangrove forest along the Brunei River, not far from the Royal Palace, where they co-exist with human settlement. It only takes travellers twenty minutes by boat to encounter this rare species.

Batu Apoi Forest Reserve and the Ulu Temburong National Park

The Batu Apoi Forest Reserve is a 50,000 hectare virgin jungle which is so dense that the only way to access it is by ‘temuai' or boat. This reserve is also called Ulu Temburong National Park and consists of steep, almost impenetrable forests and swamps with sparse human inhabitation. The Kuala Belaong Field Studies Centre, deep inside this forest, has been set up to study the wealth of flora and fauna of this region.

Boat Tours

Tourists can take boat rides to visit the surrounding areas. Pulau Selirong is one such area that is very popular. A 45-minute boat ride from Muara brings tourists to this mangrove island, which is home to proboscis monkeys, macaques, eagles and kingfishers.

The biggest lake in Brunei, Tasek Merimbun is yet another tourist attraction. It is ensconced in a hill resort in the Tutong District. It takes about an hour to reach Tasek Merimbun by road from Bandar Seri Begawan. The activities here include bird watching and exploring jungle trails. A tourist interested in a relaxed holiday can just picnic by the lake!

Traditional Longhouses in Temburong District and Belait District (Rampayoh), near Kampong Labi, are worth visiting. A river safari down the river of Belait gives the best view of these longhouses, which are unique to Borneo's small villages.

Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreation Park

This 70 acre recreation park on verdant hill slopes has facilities for cycling, hiking and fishing. Come evening and the area is full of fitness buffs working up a sweat. Entrance to the park is free.

Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium

This state-of-the-art stadium is situated at Berakas, which is at a distance of five kilometres from the centre of the city. The 1999 SEA Games were held in this stadium, which also has a Sports Medicine and Research Centre. Adjoining the outdoor stadium is the Indoor Stadium that can seat 6000 spectators, the International Tennis Centre, the International Swimming Complex and the Practice Track and Field Complex.

Malay Technology Museum

The Malay Technology Museum offers a glimpse of the traditional technologies of Brunei. Due to the proliferation of modern technology, many of the ancient technologies that were used in the cottage industries of Brunei have been phased out. The Malay Museum collects documents and exhibits these technologies for the benefit of successive generations.

Muara Beach and Serasa Beach

Muara Beach is a pristine white sand beach with tourist facilities. Serasa Beach has an exclusive Serasa Water Sports Complex for international level competitions in sailing and water skiing. The beach also offers wind surfing, kayaking and jet skiing opportunities.

Other Attractions

There are some other interesting tourist attractions in Brunei. There is the Olympic-sized Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with a track and field complex for competitive athletics. There is also an 18-hole, par 71 championship golf course designed by the famous Jack Nicklaus at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Pulau Ranggu

This monkey sanctuary is home to the macaques and the famous proboscis monkeys with their huge hanging noses. A water taxi ride or Brunei tour at sunset along the river bank is the best way to see these monkeys.

Taman Mini Perayaan Kampong Parit

This verdant park, near the Wasai Kendall, exhibits miniature water village houses of Kampong Ayer and rural Brunei. These models, replicated to the last detail, stand on stilts in a small river.

Taman Tasek

Taman Tasek is a lush natural reserve located right in the middle of the city. It takes just 15 minutes by foot from Bandar Seri Begawan to reach this verdant forest which even has a waterfall!

Tasek Merimbun

Merimbun Heritage Park or Tasek Merimbun is 21 miles (27 kilometres) away from Tutong and is home to the only black water lake in Borneo. It is also the biggest lake in Brunei. This is a peaceful park surrounded by green forests. Tourists can also explore two nearby islands and the jungle trails that radiate from the park.

The House of Twelve Roofs

The House of Twelve Roofs was the residence of the British Resident of Brunei from 1906, when the British Residential system was introduced in Brunei. This quaint example of British architecture documents the long-standing relationship between the United Kingdom and Brunei since the 1800s.

The Wasai Kendal

The Wasai Kendal, also called the Kendal Waterfall, is a scenic retreat with crystal clear pools, refreshing cool water, wide walking trails and beautiful flowers. It is situated at a distance of about 1.5 kilometres off Jalan Tutong, at Mukim Kilanas.

Water sports

Brunei Bay and its surrounding islands offer a variety of water sports like skin diving, jet skiing, sailing and swimming. There are training and certification courses in scuba diving, water skiing and water boarding for beginners, while veteran seamen can go on yachting expeditions. At Brunei Bay, tourists can also try their hand at traditional sports like kite flying and Gasing. Gasing is a game where tops (some of which weigh as much as 7 kilos) are spun in special arenas. This game, a great favourite with the locals, tests the strength, aim and timing of the player.
