WELCOME TO BRUNEI!

MegaBorneo Tour Planner is owned and operated by Ai Lee Tan, born and bred in Brunei, and Khirul Zainie, who is a Sarawakian from Miri.

It is our greatest wish to share with you, the intrepid and independent traveller, the beauty and sometimes hidden magic of our beloved Brunei.  Together we have over 30 years experience in the global travel industry and now we bring our international experience to a local level, having created a specialised company that believes in, promotes and carries out sustainable tourism practices for the preservation of our local culture and natural heritage.  We want to give you the key to understand the story of what is now Borneo Island, an intriguing history of modern politics and a six century old majestic sultanate which began and still exists now only in Brunei. It is our joy to show you the different ethnic cultural heritage of this destination whilst being treated to the splendour of our natural environment: the tropical jungles and rare and amazing wildlife.

MEGABORNEO TOUR PLANNER AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

We know that travellers who come to our company are looking for best practices in relation to sustainable tourism.  It is the reason we started our own company, because it is our firm belief that the only way forward for global tourism is through sustainable tourism practices.  We are proud that our destination Brunei is the smallest and richest country in South East Asia not only in terms of monetary wealth but also in terms of history and culture. And so we want to protect this.  We believe that tourism and travel can create better understanding and mutual respect amongst people from different geographical and cultural backgrounds.

Our present practices in relation to protecting the unique culture and environment of Brunei include training and employing local staff; supporting local boat companies and local villagers by including their services in our daily sightseeing tours to the Water villages, and by promoting and facilitating local dining experiences in local homes. There are also projects we are working on for the future which include: creating a Borneo local home stay experience which will include staying with local families in the water village, tribal longhouses and Malay villages in the interior part of Brunei or Borneo. We are also planning to develop a chain of unique MegaBorneo Nature Lodges at different locations in Brunei and Sarawak. One of the main objectives is to ensure additional income is created for the local community where we develop these projects.

We strongly believe that tourism must be able to contribute to the economy of the local community where we operate and at the same time contribute positively in the preservation of the cultural heritage of that local community and the conservation of the natural resources. The activities or products we use and promote must also be able to educate both the local community and the international visitors on the importance of preserving our local cultural heritage and natural resources in order to ensure sustainability of the whole tourism industry.

We are very proud to be associated with WHL as the MPO in Brunei, Kuching, Miri, Mulu and Kuala Lumpur.  WHL's strong commitment to sustainable tourism and their acknowledgement of the importance of being local really go hand in hand with our company's mission.

We take care to uphold our authentic local approach and all of our key family team members operating in Brunei, Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak are local Borneans. Our team members in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of West Malaysia are also locals. All of them are seasoned hospitality practitioners with more than 20 years of travel industry exposure at international level. Some are pioneers in developing sustainable inbound tourism in their own areas.

Together, we combine our individual strengths and knowledge to offer a unique authentic local experience to all international visitors to the destination that we all call our home: Brunei, Borneo Island and Malaysia.  The company provides a 24 hour helpline in English, Mandarin, Japanese, Thai, Farsi and Arabic for the convenience of all our valued clients from overseas.

In terms of natural resources, Brunei is the best place on Borneo Island to see the rare Wild Proboscis monkey. A 10 minute boat ride from the jetty in the capital city will bring you to a mangrove area where the proboscis monkey co-exists with the local residents. And it is here, on this island, where you can find the world's largest flower, the biggest cave passage in the world, the longest underground river system in the world, the biggest Malay water village in the world, the highest peak in the region, the biggest residential palace in the world, the Orang Utan, the rich and unique history of the White Rajah, the descendents of the once-feared head hunter, the longest surviving monarchy in the world and much much more.
