Miri Oil Town Full Day Excursion

This tour introduces you to the history of the oil and gas industry in Malaysia, in addition to the culture of different ethnic groups. Just 2-hour drive from Brunei; the Miri Resort City is the first oil town of Malaysia and also the gateway to northern Sarawak.

Miri comprises of a multi-cultural society made up of Malay, Chinese, Iban, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Bidayu, Penan and expatriates. There were only a few straggling huts by a black river before the discovery of oil in Miri. After oil was discovered in 1910 on Canada Hill, Miri town attracted a flock of foreign laborers and the town boomed. Later, offshore oil exploration started in the 60's and Lutong town became the hub of oil production. Since, Miri has developed into a prosperous city.

Itinerary

The tour starts with pick up from your hotel.  Proceed for a two hour scenic drive passing Tutong Town on the highway and crossing the border at Sungai 7 immigration and customs post.

After the immigration and custom clearance, continue the journey crossing the ASEAN Bridge over the Baram River then into Miri.  First, drive around the small Lutong Town where the first petroleum refinery in Malaysia is located. Later continue the journey, drive into Miri City, stop will be made at "Grand Old Lady" - where oil was first discovered in 1910. Enjoy the scenic view of Miri City from the top of the Canada Hill.

Proceed to Miri town to have lunch at a local restaurant.   After lunch continue your tour of Miri City with a visit to Tamu Muhibbah to learn about produce of local farms and jungle. 

Continue driving through old shop houses and a Chinese temple which sits by the riverside. Then continue to the new developed shopping areas of Miri City where you will have some free time to shop for some local souvenirs from Sarawak.

Later, overland transfer back to Brunei.  Before crossing the border, a brief stop will be made at a duty free shop for you to buy duty free items such as alcohol and cigarettes.

Your tour ends with drop off at your hotel.
